Writing takes more than guts and skills, you must have a curious mind.

There are various variations of writing. We have the journalistic approach to writing where it is in form of a report, telling on something or a situation or someone etc and then we have copywriting which is writing for advertising. We also have creative writing which for me, is basically writing for self, having fun, writing poems, stories etc. All these forms of writing have presently met on a page called ‘storytelling’; my favorite form of writing. It entices, enchants and engages you.

Storytelling is a strong mode for content writing which is basically writing for online media. Now, storytelling can be in writing form, picture form, voice or video. What are you trying to say? What do you want the audience to take out when they see your picture? It is not just a word, it should be a phrase or a feeling that encompasses a huge, enchanting story. I like to dream.

I bet you read 3 stories out of it? I can tell you 9. This is the concept around good storytelling. It should take you on a magical ride where you imagine yourself in the story and feel elevated. Writing great compelling stories is important especially online.

To create such a compelling story, you must first enjoy dreaming.  The mind is rich with great stories if only you set it free. Before writing, think about it, dream about it, let it make you laugh and spur you to write. You must have the single message you want people to take out of the story. After dreaming about it, write it down; the first draft. It does not have to be perfect, just write as you feel. After that, take the time to craft who major character – who is he? What does she like? Where will you find them on a good day after work? Are they friendly or grumpy? Is it caring or adventurous? What is funny about her and what stands out in his facial features. As you create your protagonist, think about an antagonist. Can be human or not. You need these two characters always in conflict to create suspense and intrigue. No matter how short your story, you need SUSPENSE. I like to end my story with one so people create the end in their own way.

You must also learn how to write good dialogue, write in the way your audience speaks, using common words they use. Do not write with big words that needs a dictionary to understand, online is not a place to flex intelligence except you are writing for a professional forum. Write in simple words but ensure to create the story that can arouse curiosity and let the reader use his or her imagination. They should read your story as if watching a movie.

A good story must end without typos. Avoid them, use grammar apps to correct and cross check your story. If you must use pictures, use one that can create the needed effect just like this one…

To end your story, to make it more compelling, think about the headline. Use words that will drag a reader into the story, the headline should tell the story in bits. Make sure you use relevant keywords so you can appear in search. The keywords you use in your headline should be embedded in your story too.
