The Mind Shift - Square pants in a round hole…can they fit?
I have always been a creative.
I studied Theatre Arts as an undergraduate and acted on stage for a while before diving into advertising. It was a given since I had a flair for writing.
My advertising career came out of a need, a need for my friends who were artists in the industry. I helped them with ideas and what I found out later was called, copy. These friends knew I loved to write and that I complained so much about Nigerian advertising and so, they encouraged me to make a difference in the industry by donating towards my attending Orange Academy. They went further to get me into copy internships with ad agencies.
Fast-forward to years later, here I am, a renowned copywriter who has carved a niche in the communication industry.
I look forward to challenges, as usual; I am ambitious and so, expected… no wonder I could not spend more than a year in an agency. Due to my ambition and lust for challenges, I joined WorldWriters, did my masters in Media Communication via a scholarship and took up a job as a Business Development Manager for a drink brand long before joining a bank, when the opportunity came along.

The shifts helped me build a marketing communication mindset. I realized I loved building brands and so took so may online courses in the field.
Rewind to last year.
Working in a bank was the most challenging of them all. It was like coming from an animated colorful world into a black and white stick movie. I had to literally change the way I think, look and behave. My writing too tuned to fit a specific audience and I longed always to write for external. It was relevant that I found time to mix with my creative friends, browse creative sites and kept that side of me intact. I knew I could easily shift my mindset to think like a ‘banker’. Trust me, they think differently.
I lasted a year and I actually celebrated that. People who knew me thought I won’t so it came as no surprise when I left 15months down the line (a story for another page).
I have mixed feelings about working as a creative in a bank. It was an eye-opener for sure and now, I am so sure there is nowhere I can not work and survive as a communication specialist.
Challenge is relevant for improvement in one’s career. It builds capacity you never thought you had and opens your mind to fresh areas you never thought existed.
One thing for sure, challenges will help;
1. Build your people management skills
2. Find other ways to solve problems
3. Build new skillset, improving your performance
4. Improve how you communicate in the workplace
5. Most especially carve your career path
So next time you feel bored in a role, maybe it is time for a Mindshift as there is no such thing as ‘not fit’.
